They wanted to make him right-handed in the Wii version since it's easier for most people (Wiimote in right hand), but they didn't have enough time to. Instead, they just flipped the whole Wii version so that a right turn in the Wii version is really a left turn in the GCN version. See that map at the bottom-left?
