This is a standard 2-base ultra build, more common on ICCUP than in pro games... the idea is early carapace, quick ultras on 2 gas (with the goal of having ultralisk armor and +2 carapace done at the same time), and then to throw everything (including ultras with +4 armor) at the terran before he has +2 attack. If it fails, you're often screwed because it's so hard to get the gas required for defilers (hence why july was trying for the lower right instead of the closer min-only right-middle.)

so disappointing.. julyzerg's macro was so noob and his micro wasn't even outstanding enough for his strat to win. if he didn't fuck up with his micro (which he doesn't when he's on his A game which is why julyzerg is like the best) then he could have had this game. just made so many micro mistakes and his macro was worse than crap.

Yeah but A: if they are at full HP, they end up with only 150 which isn't that great.
B: If they are already damaged, like those were, then they will die eventually anyways.

In response to why july just holds his irradiated ultras instead of suiciding them... irradiate actually takes 2 hits to kill an ultra with full HP, so he simply spreads them (clumping them together would cause them to give additional damage to each other) out and waits for it to wear off.
