Description:

Two suicide bombs greet Benazir Bhutto as she makes her historic journey back to Pakistan after 8 years in exile. More than 100 people are dead, and 200 others wounded, making this the deadliest terrorist attack in Pakistan's history. At least 20 policemen are amongst the dead. The attack occurred as Bhutto was escorted to her residence. As many as 200,000 people throng the streets of Karachi to greet her arrival. An estimated 20,000 security officers had been deployed to protect Bhutto. Authorities had urged Bhutto to use a helicopter to reduce the risk of attack amidst threats by extremists sympathetic to the Taliban and Al Qaeda, but she had brushed off those concerns. Prior to her arrival, Bhutto had been warned by Taliban and Al Qaeda extremists that she would be targeted for assassination in a suicide attack in revenge for her pledge to crack down on Muslim militants. While authorities have yet to confirm the identity of those responsible, it appears that a Taliban / Al-Qaeda role is likely. The United States has condemned the violent attack in Pakistan and mourns the loss of innocent lives.
