Zazueta hosted by The Commonwealth Club of California. Richardson engages in a wide-ranging conversation about his political views and background. As a seven-term congressman from New Mexico, Richardson focused his energies on major foreign policy and energy issues. In 1997, he was appointed U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and was later secretary of energy under President Clinton. Since 2002, Richardson's moderate approach to politics has characterized his leadership of New Mexico, where he has been devoted to clean energy use. Richardson's Hispanic heritage and approach to immigration issues make him an important figure in the long-term debate over border security and how to deal with illegal immigrants. -- The Commonwealth Club Governor Bill Richardson was elected Governor of New Mexico in 2002 by the largest margin of any candidate since 1964. Governor Richardson just completed his third legislative session, successfully cutting taxes for more than 500,000 working New Mexicans, creating opportunities through a statewide Pre-Kindergarten program, revamping the state's higher education system, and increasing access to quality health care. He is a candidate for the 2008 presidential election.

yeah, there's no doubt about them needing to clean up their act regarding that.

asdfpoijc21: obviously, there are huge differences between the standard strawman argument involving cattle cars and encouraging people to go home - and fewer to try to come here - over time. And the "basis for their opposition" isn't "humaneness", it's corruption: they want money or power. As for "misery", let me suggest you contact the Mexican government and encourage them to look after their own citizens instead of sending them here.

The year 2107: The United States is composed of a caste system, with Hispanics at the bottom, who live worse that rats. Central and South America huge gang crime zones. Europe is a series of warring caliphates. China and Russia totalitarian states with hegemony over their neighbors. Africa still struggles. Global warming. War. Light of liberty dim.

Bill wants secure borders, but no wall, and gives no solution to border security. We should build a wall, stop both legal and illegal immigration from the south, and allow more Indian, Asian, and European immigrants thirsting to become good Americans and contribute. Hispanics rank low in education (despite opportunity) and the military, high in crime and prison and welfare, drink too much, and care little for American culture and language. Who needs them?

Come on, now! Lacking logic, you're resorting to name-calling. Here I merely point out googlable, verifiable data. I am not a bigot, but I have only contempt for people incapable of spelling or thinking. I am replying to you and your ilk.

And who foots the bill for illegal immigrant, they have been sucking our taxes in health, education, welfare etc. I have seen it first hand and the boat can only hold so many people. We should not support an illegal human wave. We paid our dues.

The Catholic Church is funding Mexican immigration to the USA. Where did Bush go when the Comprehensive Immigration bill failed, to the Vatican. Mexico is a rich country and is clearly taking advantage of us. We don't need to deport everyone; all we need to do is take away the incentives to slow the Mexican immigration flood.

We should start with eliminating this health care for all children, which is basically an open invitation for all poor Mexicans with large families to flood our country.

you are not a bigot? If thats not racist, I don't know what is. How about treating people as individuals before condemning a whole group of people. About a 3rd of the troops serving in Iraq are hispanic and the majority of them are not even citizens. But you seem to have no qualms about handing out citizenship to these filthy unwashed eastern europeans who would cut your throat from ear to ear for a nickel.Yes that was a racist statment but at least I'm honest.
